ABC Promo for 3x15 "Quiet Minds"

Belle once upon a time

Herewith, the promo for episode 3x15, "Quiet Minds," premiering on Sunday, March 30, 2014:

"'I summon thee dark one.' Never make a powerful woman mad - 'show yourself you winged freak!' - because payback can be a real witch. 'Oops!'"

Rumor is that Belle (Emilie de Ravin) plays an important role in this episode. Also, word is that Disney’s Lumière from "Beauty and the Beast" may be showing up soon. Lumière or ‘Lawrence’ as his character is also called, will have a French accent and be a bit of an annoying know-it-all. If all these characters from "Beauty and the Beast" are on top - can the Beast be far behind?

We'll have to wait and see!

Lana Parrilla and Her Sister Deena

Lana Parrilla Deena Parilla
Lana and Deena Parrilla

Folks are interested in Lana Parrilla and her sister Deena Parrilla, and so we give the people what they want!

Lana has an intense fan base. What's interesting about it is that it seems to be overwhelmingly women. In some ways, Lana, in her iconic role of the "Once Upon a Time" Evil Queen, has taken over the vacant crown of "biggest fangirl girl crush" formerly held (or permanently retired to the fangirl girl crush Hall of Fame) by Lucy Lawless as Xena.

Lana's sister is Deena Parrilla. While she doesn't get a lot of press, Deena occasionally shows up at her sister's side at appearances at awards shows and things like that.

Everybody says Lana and Deena look just like each other... well, kind of. It's not like they are twins or anything, but there is a family resemblance. You can see it in the eyebrows, the cheeks, the nose... OMG they really are the spitting image of each other!

Their parents separated when the kids were very young, so Lana spent her first ten years living with her mother, then lived with her father. Her parents legally divorced when she was four. Presumably, older sister Deena had a similar experience. There are a few pictures of the three of them floating around, which I have included here.

As for the family "style," Lana has this to say:
“I grew up in Brooklyn and was tough — kind of loaded with attitude — and then I came here. I'm sure people found me kind of intimidating,” Parrilla says. “I didn't fit in on any level when I moved from Brooklyn to Burbank — on any level. And then I met a bunch of hippies and I became a little hippie myself. A Brooklyn hippie.”
There isn't a lot known about Deena. Rumor is that Deena has a Twitter account and posts family pictures, but it isn't a verified account, so no need to publicize that twitter handle here.

Lana herself is an avid user of social media and is always posting selfies and even occasional self-made videos for her fans. She has been known to post incredibly intimate stuff for her band of faithful Facebook admirers, the Evil Regals. It's a smart move that has won Lana a fiercely loyal fan base, and it most definitely is her and not a surrogate.

Anyway, Lana's sister keeps a low profile, so not much is known about her. That's probably just the way that she likes it, so we will leave it at that.

Some vital stats on Lana: full name Lana Maria Parrilla, born July 15, 1977, in Brooklyn, N.Y. Her late father was Sam Parrilla of the Philadelphia Phillies (played in 1970); her mother is an accomplished painter who works in banking. Lana was introduced to professional acting by her aunt, Candice Azzara, who is a noted comedy actress. Lana was engaged to Fred DiBlasio during a 2013 vacation to Israel for America's Voices in Israel, while they were touring the Negev Desert.

Swanqueen: Sexy Shots of Lana Parrilla and Jennifer Morrison Together

Two Heroic Ladies Together

Lana Parrilla Jennifer Morrison
Lana Parrilla and Jennifer Morrison.
Due to popular demand, I have compiled some more pictures of "Once Upon a Time" actresses Lana Parrilla and Jennifer Morrison together. This is the famous 'Swanqueen' pairing that we discuss more below, after the photos.

Some of these are show promo photos, some are informal selfies from Lana (who likes to post pictures on Twitters), and some, quite frankly, are photoshopped by fans. I don't think anybody really cares about that, and they are expertly done.

The two appear to get along famously in real life.
I think that everyone involved with the show realizes the intense interest by some fans for shots of this kind, and it is AOK. Lana Parrilla and Jennifer Morrison themselves play into the scenario willingly. What you make of them is up to you. Clearly, there is nothing actually going on between the two, and it is extremely likely there never will be.

Anyway, hope you enjoy them.

Yes, these shots apparently are quite real, and they know exactly what they are doing, and I'm sure they all had a good laugh about it afterward, too.

Lana is really into selfies, they do look different in poor lighting (as do we all).

Together at last.

Fans are fans. Period.

As I write this, a full year has passed since the events discussed below, so presumably the whole thing has blown over. No need for anyone else (most importantly yours truly) to get in the midst of a major windshear.

Before getting into this at all, there is some lingo you might not know. Fans nowadays use the word 'ship' in place of 'worship,' presumably because 'worship' sounds kind of gack but, well, that's what is meant by the term. So there are 'shippers' and all sorts of other permutations on that. The word 'ship' has become in certain contexts sort of a synonym for fangirl/fanboy, which terms themselves have achieved the Nirvana of negative connotations (go figure), so the show people in particular don't want to use those kinds of word. Hence, the use of 'ship' and 'shipping' and 'shipmeister' and 'blow the ship down' and so on and so forth homina homina homina.

Second, there is a very vocal contingent of fans who desperately want Emma and Regina to hook up. I can't be any plainer than that, and there is no beating about the bush on this subject. They have fansites and Facebook pages and, well, all sorts of Internet thingies. The Internet has unleashed this sort of phenomenon, wherein vocal fans sort of become ringleaders for a latent desire within the fandom as a whole for certain things to, you know, 'happen' in the show. It's become like cheering on Michael Jordan and the Bulls. In this context it is called the 'Swanqueen' phenomenon (once it gets its own name you know it's a big deal), which word is a combination of Emma Swan and the Regina/Evil Queen. You know, the two together as one.

The show people know all about this, um, shipping of the union of the two ladies, and the actors themselves know all about this, too. How could they not, they all practically live on Twitter these days. They play along as far as they can. Fans are fans, and if fans wanted the leads to be from Zanzibar or from Atlantis or from the far side of the moon, well, why alienate fans? Fans are hard to come by. This is a customer driven business, so you please the customers. If you run a show and are smart, you don't tell fans 'No,' ever; you simply do what you gots to do and lets them find a new cause. Sabes?

Matters came to a head, so to speak, at the end of 2013. Actor Michael Coleman plays Happy the Dwarf, and he decided to stir the fires a bit on, you guessed it, Twitter. Twitter, incidentally, is like a loaded gun, either you keep it in the draw and only take it out with loving care, or you can shoot up the entire house accidentally. And that shooting up of the premises happens way too often, but some folks are slow learners.

Coleman apparently (the Tweets mostly have been deleted, assuming they did exist in the first place, which many people say they saw) shot off a series of Tweets on the subject of SwanQueen. Why he cares a whit about Swanqueen is one of the murkier aspects of the entire affair, it's not as if Happy the Dwarf was going to be, you, know, involved. The gist or tenor or what-have-you of the Coleman Tweets was that the 'Once Upon a Time' people (actors, producers, writers, key grips, best boys) know that the SwanQueen fans are out there, and (here's where the water gets white) the people behind the scenes find the SwanQueen people annoying. He capped matters by pretty definitively Tweeting that Regina and Emma are not ever, ever ever (thank you Taylor) going to hook up, so the SwanQueen fans should just simmer down.

So, well, there. As subsequent events on the show's plot have demonstrated, Coleman was 100% correct and they (co-creators and writers) went in a completely different direction on the romance angle. Yes, there is romance now on 'Once Upon a Time,' but it, er, straight romance. You know, the Disney kind on a Disney show, who'd a thunk? That angle, if you follow the show at all, obviously did not include any SwanQueen pairing.

There is absolutely no indication that IRL (in real life, more lingo there, I'm not trying to be condescending but folks who don't know the terms do exist) Lana Parrilla and Jennifer Morrison like each other, or dislike each other, or are anything other than colleague/pals/actors on the set of 'Once Upon a Time.' I've never seen a hint that they are anything but professional towards each other. If they secretly hate each other, or secretly lust after each other, well, their best acting job of all is keeping that secret. This tempest is all about made-up characters, and the idea of fans agitating in an almost political sense about plot twists that come out of the tip of a writer's pen is quite fanciful, but real. That is what is going on, and they are the fans, and they in a very real sense pay the bills.

Without (thankfully) any further editorial comment from me, below are some of the Tweets that aroused the ire of the SwanQueen fans, and some of the show people's reactions.

So, Coleman just poured more gasoline on the fire (it was late at night, he should have just gone to bed), using some colorful language which twisted some folks' noses way out of joint. If you have spent any time on the Internet, you know what he was in for. But Coleman couldn't let it go.

Oh, my, as Sulu would say. Word of this 'attack on the fandom' spread about as quickly as those Colorado wildfires we always hear about. Damage control was swift and overpowering, with everyone who could possibly have any say over this chiming in faster than you can say, well, 'SwanQueen.'

TBC = To Be Clear. Just to be clear.

A back-bencher does not want the star of the show to resent them. Show co-creator Adam Horowitz practically repeated Lana's Tweet word for word. Hmmmmm.

As mentioned, 'Happy' Coleman ultimately was proven correct (and why not, he's an insider and would know) and the show went in a different direction than the preferred SwanQueen way. What possessed him to divulge show secrets - that's a huge no-no - and antagonize fans in the process is unclear and best left to your imagination. And annoying Lana Parrilla and Jennifer Morrison was probably his biggest mistake of all.

And that's all I have to say about that.

3x14 Promo "The Tower" Season 3 Episode 14

"Once" Lets Down Its Hair in "The Tower"

Alexandra Metz Rapunzel
Hairy girl Alexandra Metz stars as Rapunzel

Rumpelstiltskin returns, and Rapunzel shows up as well! "The Tower" premieres on Sunday, March 22, 2014. Alexandra Metz, who was a witch on "The Originals," will guest star as Rapunzel.

Behind the scenes: Rapunzel's Tower under construction
As for the "Rapunzel" angle, executive producer Adam Horowitz said, "We're not doing Tangled; we're doing our spin on the character." Added fellow executive producer Edward Kitsis, "We went a little darker and freakier. A little more horror story in the vein of [the 2004 movie] The Grudge."

Josh Dallas Alexandra Metz

As for the plot? Rapunzel (Alexandra Metz) will be visited in her tower by Prince Charming (Josh Dallas) as well as a mystery lady. Might it be the Wicked Witch of the West (Rebecca Mader) lurking under that hood? "I can't tell you," says Mader.

I think that's a yes.

"Witch Hunt" Promo Stills 3x13

Once Upon a Time Witch Hunt 3x13

Episode 3x13 "Witch Hunt" was filmed last November right before Thanksgiving. It couldn't have been too comfortable filming in Vancouver with the gales of November bearing down on the cast outside.

Here, we present some official publicity stills from ABC from that episode. Guest star Rebecca Mader plays the Wicked Witch of the West.
